What is the rarest blood type?
• In the US population, the rarest blood type is AB negative. This is not a problem if you are type AB, because you can receive O, A, and B blood also. We call this the Universal Recipient type. • Type O negative is called the Universal Donor because this blood can be given to anyone. O negative donors are very important to us for two reasons. First, their blood is given in emergency situations when we do not know the blood type of the injured person. Second, O negative people can only receive type O negative blood. • This blood type MUST be available for these patients.
