What is the ranking for the Open University?
The O.U. doesn’t seem to be in the Guardian or the Times league tables and I think this is because it cannot be compared with other Universities on equal factors. For example, the O.U does not deliver ‘teaching’ as such, more you are supported by a tutor whilst you teach yourself. It also cannot be graded on aspects such as accommodation, facilities and entry standards (as literally anyone can study with them). The O.U would also score low on things like student:staff ratio simply because there’s no need for a lot of staff to deliver lectures etc. The O.U would also possibly have a higher drop-out rate simply because so many of it’s students work full time, quite the opposite to ‘brick’ uni students! To attempt to compare the O.U with ‘brick’ universities in a competitive fashion would be unfair.
