What is the rake angle?
The angle of the teeth on a saw blade is called the rake angle & it determines how fast or aggressive the saw blade will cut. This is also often referred to as the ‘hook angle’. The rake angle is calculated according to the angle of the tooth face in relation to a line drawn from the centre of the saw blade through the tip of the saw tooth (as shown by the blue line). Positive rake teeth have a forward tilt whilst negative rake teeth have zero or backward tilt angle. Blades with a high positive rake are aggressive & fast-cutting. Blades with a lesser, or negative rake, take smaller ‘bites’& although they take longer to perform the cut, they are generally easier to control & produce a finer finish.
