What is the R-Value?

Our insulation air barrier system offers and installed R-value of over 6.0 per inch. In comparison to some of the other insulation systems, SPF closed-cell foam does not have gaps nor does it sag over time. Gaps and sagging can reduce component R-values of other systems by as much as 25%.

The 6.5″ MagWall has a rating of R-20 and a 9.25″ wall has a rating of R28, however it is important to note that MagWall far outperforms conventional walls with the same R value rating. MagWall utilizes a closed cell EPS core. This results in a solid, air tight wall that requires up to 60% fewer BTU’s for heating and cooling vs a conventional wall with the same R value rating.

The R-value will vary, depending on the thickness of the sections. The polystyrene has an overall R-value of 4.5 per inch. So, 6-inch deep sections have a nominal R-value of 27 prior to interior and exterior finishing. The insulating value for the load-bearing joist portion is an R-9.

R-values are measured by testing laboratories who use, ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) procedures. Existing test procedures require that the sample submitted be 1″ thick therefore paints and coatings cannot be tested using established test methods. Tests have been performed on 1″ thick materials with a known R value and then compared with the same material coated with insulating ceramic reinforced paints and the difference between the two is equal to an average of 35% reduction of heat transfer. This is supported by the customer feedback we receive.
