By world standards, the bauxite mined in the Darling Range is of poor quality because of the low proportion of alumina that is available to be extracted from the ore and also because it contains high levels of impurities. However, it is still profitable to mine this ore because of the close proximity of the mine to the refineries and ports and the use of technology to maximise efficiency.
