What is the Qualifying Exam and when is it offered? How do I prepare for it?
Upon completion of the core course work, students must pass a qualifying written examination to become a candidate for the Ph.D. degree. The qualifying exam is offered once a year (typically August) and is administered by the Division qualifier committee. This exam is designed to test the student’s competence in core courses and a reading list of additional topics. Once qualified, the Ph.D. student is required to present a research presentation.
