What is the Purpose of WHMIS Labels?
A WHMIS label is designed to identify the product as a controlled product and alert employees or handlers to the hazards and the safe handling procedures of the product. The WHMIS label is just a first alert, the amount of information in it is limited by its size. The MSDS provides more detailed information. Types of WHMIS Labels Two types of labels are prescribed under WHMIS. These are referred to as a Supplier Label, and a Workplace Label. A Supplier Label is attached to a container of a controlled product by the supplier. For products purchased outside Canada (where the University acts as the importer), the University is responsible for the application of a Supplier Label. A Workplace Label is attached to a container of a controlled product within the University under specific circumstances described later in this manual. Other types of identification may be used where labels are not practical, for example, piles of bulk material or a piping system which carries a controlled product
