What is the purpose of the voluntary ID card system outlined in LD 1418?
Twelve states permit the medical use of marijuana. Maine is one of only two states that do not have an ID card system. ID cards issued by the state government identify people who have been approved to use medical marijuana. Without a card system, legitimate patients can be arrested by mistake, which is costly to both the patients and law enforcement. Patients who choose to apply for an ID card would have ready evidence that they qualify to use marijuana for medical purposes, and law enforcement officers would have an efficient method of verifying that a person is a medical marijuana patient.
