What is the purpose of the rotating outer bezel?

With the rotating bezel, you can use the instrument as a regular base plate compass. For instance, if you wish to go in the direction of 300º, rotate the bezel until 300º is at the 12 o’clock position. Then, rotate the whole unit so that the top of the North-South arrow is aligned with N on the bezel. The 12 o’clock point on the bezel now shows the direction in which you should proceed. You can also use the bezel to indicate North in the Bearing Tracking Mode, or as a memory aid in the Altimeter Mode to mark a certain altitude on the circumference to follow your vertical progress.
