What is the purpose of the pelvic exam?
The pelvic exam is like any other one you have had in the past when not pregnant: Your doctor will check the shape and size of your uterus and make sure you are not too tender anywhere. Excessive tenderness may be a sign of inflammation or infection. Your doctor will take cultures to rule out infections, including chlamydia, which may not cause any symptoms. A Pap smear will also be done to check for cervical cancer or dysplasia (cell changes that may lead to cancer). Many doctors explain what they are doing and what they are looking for during the examination, which patients find reassuring. What blood tests will the doctor perform?
