What is the purpose of the Illinois Accessibility Code?
The purpose of the Illinois Accessibility Code (IAC) [Effective April 24, 1997}, is to implement the Environmental Barriers Act (EBA) [410 ILCS 25], enacted in 1985 and amended in 1996.This code is intended to ensure that the built environment, including all spaces and elements of all applicable buildings and facilities in the State of Illinois, is so designed, constructed, and/or altered to assure the safety and welfare of all members of society and to be readily accessible to, and usable by environmentally limited persons.This code applies to all government buildings and private buildings held out for public use. The provisions of the Illinois Accessibility Code constitute minimum requirements.
