What is the purpose of the Citizens Investigative Board (CIB)?
The Citizens’ Investigative Board (CIB) will be an agency that will investigate citizen complaints of misconduct by Sheriff’s officers and make recommendations with regard to Department policies and procedures. The Board will be composed primarily of non-law enforcement officers, and act independently of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Department. The number of fatal shootings has increased in recent years and there needs to be a serious review of the Escambia County Sheriff Department’s policies covering such matters as the “use of deadly force” and the “discharge of weapons.” We cannot continue to sit back and watch as more and more people are killed by the officers who are sworn to protect them. When the use of deadly force becomes the first option, the number of people killed at the hands of police officers will increase and the community will grow more fearful and resentful of law enforcement.
