What is the purpose of such classifications?
We need to represent knowledge about: • Objects in the domain, their properties, and relationships between them. • States and beliefs. • How people solve problems. • Actions and events. • Models and theories. • Algorithmic calculations. Rules are best for representing experts’ heuristics for problem solving, for states and beliefs (this is true IF …), causal sequences of events, and some types of model. They can be used to represent the other types of knowledge, but not so easily. Frames are best for representing what we know about objects in the domain, their classification and relationships and models of them; where to apply algorithms; and intermediate or possible actions. Other things are harder to do with frames, so all frame-based systems also use rules.
