What is the purpose of placement testing?
The placement test is a series of basic skills assessments completed via paper and pencil or on a computer. The tests are designed to measure current skills in reading, writing, and math. This assessment allows you and the ACC staff to work together to help you succeed in your courses. Test scores indicate areas where you may need help and which courses might be a starting point for your educational career. Contact the Testing Center in advance if you have any questions or need accommodations for the test.

Any student completing an application for admission to Alvin Community College is required to participate in testing. Students enrolled in level one certification courses may be exempt.
The purpose of the placement test is to determine the individual skill level and readiness in English, Reading and Math. Because students enter college with different skill levels, we administer a test to determine the appropriate course(s) a student needs to begin with for their chosen curriculum. This is an important test because it determines which courses you will take during the first semester of enrollment and beyond.
Placement tests are used to determine whether a student may benefit from developmental coursework prior to enrolling in college-level classes. Placement tests in English (writing and reading) and mathematics generally are required for all entering students seeking admission to degree and certificate programs, as well as some career studies certificate programs.
