Pine tar or Grundvalla impregnates and seals the wood sole of the ski and keeps it from getting wet. Constant soaking and drying is not good for any wood and can sometimes cause ski warping. Pine tar also holds the running waxes better than bare wood. If the bare wood is wet, it will not hold running waxes at all.
