What is the purpose of monks and nuns? What are they supposed to do?
Simple monks and nuns are supposed to stay in the monastery away from the lay communities and practice meditation, chanting, studies on Philosophies etc. They give more time for self improvement and developing spiritual qualities. When these monks and nuns finish their higher studies they teach in the monastery and even in the lay communities. Since the main practice of Buddhism is to get enlightened, the main purpose of monks and nuns are to practice dharma and get enlightened.
