What is the purpose of CVSA recertification, and why do I need it?
A. Recertification is mandated by NITV, the CVSA’s manufacturer; but, that isn’t the biggest reason. Polygraph has no set educational requirements after the first year; and, consequently, they have some problems reading other polygraph examiner’s charts. The only way that CVSA examiners can remain sharp, observe proper testing procedures, and have the ability to give accurate cold calls (read other examiner’s charts) is to attend training seminars. An examiner must be recertified at least every three years. Without that recertification requirement examiners could develop bad habits and may not realize it. That could result in the examiner making bad calls, which would not be good for the case, the department, or the examiner. The department should also consider the legal ramifications of allowing a de-certified examiner to run CVSA examinations. Vicarious liability flows upward. It is very important for examiners to maintain their certification and conduct proper tests.
