What is the purpose of applying a cordage batching-oil mixture to fibers?
Applying oil to fiber has a three-fold function. Oil serves: (a) as a lubricant, to minimize friction between fiber and pins and between fibers; (b) as a softener, to soften the fibers and make combing easier; and (c), depending on the type of oil mixture applied, as a preservative, to protect the rope from mildew and/or rot.
