What is the purpose of a phalanx?
A phalanx is a formation used in battle. Soldiers line up shoulder to shoulder with their shields overlapping each other. This is to protect the soldier to their left. The right flank is the most vulnerable place in a phalanx and is where the most expierienced soldiers were put. Spears were used in this formation. With huge shields protecting them and spears protruding it was a dangerous formation to charge. It was used often by the greeks who put it to well use.
