What is the purpose of a nuclear medicine thyroid test ?
a thyroid test is a nuclear type of test because it uses the nuclear properties of matter in diagnosis and therapy. thyroid tests are requested to be performed on a patient’s blood to test whether the patient has normally functioning thyroid or whether its function is slowing down or rapidly producing thyroid hormones. when the thyroid gland is hyperactive (hyperthyroidism) the body metabolism is also hyperactive –> patient has bulging eyes, diarrhea and cachectic or very thin despite big food intake. if hypothyroid, patient is fat with less food intake, slow acting and is always constipated.
