What is the purpose of a course syllabus?
The first purpose is to serve as a contract between the instructor and the student—it serves to set forth what is expected during the term of the semester. The second purpose is to address any behaviors or policies that could affect a student’s grade. The third purpose is to address the area of academic dishonesty. Fourth, it is useful to mention polices related to the academic freedom of the students, that is, respect the rights of their peers to express their opinions. Finally, the syllabus should mention the rights of students with disabilities.
