The proper way to use ABS in an emergency situation is to simply let the ABS module do it’s job and concentrate on maintaining directional control. What most people fail to realize is that ABS is NOT intended to shorten braking distance (though it usually does) but to allow braking and steering simultaneously. Locking up the tires may make youskid into an obstacle with no directional control. ABS allows you to slow down and steer AROUND the obstacle. While highly skilled drivers use threshold braking with non-ABS brakes, this requires considerable skill to juggle the proper amount of braking pressure and modulating it to maintain the proper balance of braking performance and lateral grip without exceeding the gripping abilities of the tires, which vary based on suspension design, vehicle weight, road conditions, etcetera ad nauseum. 90% of drivers lack theses skills, and most of the people who say they can do it are smack-talking out their posterior orifice trying to sound macho.
