What is the proper procedure to remove a UST tank?
State rules require the following when removing an UST: 1. Notify your local fire dept. before you take an UST out of service for removal. Your local F.D. representative will require that you make application for removal and transportation to an approved tank disposal yard (form FP-292). 2. Have the tank emptied of liquids, dangerous vapor levels, and accumulated sludge. These potentially very hazardous actions need to be carried out by trained personnel who carefully follow standard safety practices. After the tank has been properly emptied and inerted it can be removed. 3. Within seven (7) working days the owner/operator or his/her representative must complete UST Form FP-290 (FP-290R if all tanks are removed) and mail it with copies of all pertinent permits to: UST Compliance Program, Department of Fire Services, P.O. Box 1025, State Road, Stow, MA 01775. Compliance with this part assures that you will not receive yearly tank fee invoices for tanks that are no longer in the ground.
