What is the Prognosis for Self-Injurious Behavior?
The prognosis for self-injurious behavior is dependent on multiple factors. The severity of any underlying psychological disorder, especially personality disorders, adversely affects the likelihood of recovery. An association with childhood psychological trauma, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder also affects prognosis. A history of sexual abuse, or severe physical abuse predicts a poorer prognosis. Actual suicide attempts are also have a poorer prognosis.
