What is the process to create a silk embroidery piece?
The artist begins with an oil painting or photograph and either pencil sketches the reference picture by freehand or scans an outline of the picture, onto a silk satin cloth. Based on the reference photo, the artist then plans out how she or he will recreate the original photo, with some degree of freedom given to the artist to vary the shading of colors in the original picture. Moreover, the artist may vary the type of stitch (e.g., short and long, cross and flat, etc.) to most effectively recreate the original photo. Using this image, the artist is able to employ artistic freedom to recreate the painting or photo as she/he desires, according to her own tastes or her customers preferences. The embroidery artist is able to create depth, shadowing and a textured effect to reproduce a photo or painting.
