What is the process of property acquisition?
When a road construction project requires land in addition to the existing road right of way, the City of Brampton’s objective is to ensure that the required land parcels are acquired while individual property owners’ rights are respected and compensation is made to the property owner. In acquiring property, the City of Brampton must balance the larger community’s public interest needs with the rights of affected individuals. While our first goal is to negotiate mutually acceptable agreements, in some cases, the City may exercise its authority under the Expropriations Act to acquire the property it requires. This is necessary if public interest requires that deadlines be met, or where a negotiated agreement cannot be reached. Of course, affected property owners are entitled to compensation, whether negotiated, or under the expropriation process.
