What is the process for a step parent adopting a child?
A step parent, if aged at least 21, can apply to adopt their partner’s child. The adoption order to the step parent does not change the legal position of the birth parent with whom the step parent and child live, but ends any parental responsibility of the other birth parent. It is necessary for step parents to have lived together as a family with the child for at least six months before an adoption application can be made.
