What is the procedure for foundation doctors issuing prescriptions in GP placements?
When prescribing, an F2 doctor should use their supervising GP’s FP10. Authorisation, such as a countersignature, is not required but the supervising GP is responsible for ensuring that prescribing is accurate and appropriate. It is a legal requirement for deaneries/foundation schools is to advise the doctor’s employing organisation (eg. trust or board) of the names of F2 doctors and their general practice supervisor with the dates of their placement. Primary care trusts can then pass this information to their pharmacists. It is important to note that foundation doctors must not be put in a position where they are asked to work beyond their competence without appropriate support and supervision from their clinical supervisor.
