What is the problem with delaying bowel movements?
Delaying bowel movements usually results in constipation. When digested food enters the bowels, it is watery – like diarrhea. One of the bowel’s jobs is to absorb some of this water and prevent diarrhea. The longer the stool sits within the bowels, the more water is absorbed. Stool that sits for extended periods of time eventually become dry and hard, and difficult to pass. This can cause a stool back-up and constipation. Over time, people who consistently fail to respond to the urge for a bowel movement may stop feeling an urge at all.
