I say “almost directly” because if the Moon were directly between the Sun and the Earth, there would be a solar eclipse. But because the Moon’s orbit around the Earth is at an angle to the Earth’s orbit around the Moon, the lineup is only close enough for an eclipse about every 6 months or so.
