What is the position if I think that my child is ready for school but he or she does not become five until after the end of February?
There is substantial research evidence that early entry to primary school is not in the best interests of children and should be considered only in circumstances where the child is exceptionally mature socially, emotionally and intellectually. If you are considering applying for your child to start school a year early, you should discuss this with your nursery school headteacher and with the headteacher of the school which your child would attend in order to take account of their advice. They may suggest consulting the Pyschological Service; alternatively, you should feel free to contact the Psychological Service directly. An Educational Psychologist will offer to meet you and will be able to give you access to relevant research evidence. After this discussion, if you wish to proceed with a formal request, you should write to the Head of Education. Such requests must be received by 30 April in order to allow due consideration to be given to them prior to the school commencement date in
