The population of Elkhorn, Nebraska was 6,062 at the 2000 census and had grown to 8,192 by the 2005 estimate. Elkhorn was an independent, first-class city until it was unilaterally annexed by Omaha, NebraskaOmaha in 2005. However, the actual annexation will take effect on January 22nd, 2007 unless the Elkhorn city council decides to file a response asking the Nebraska Supreme Court to reconsider. After that, the court would have 60 days to respond. The Elkhorn city council may also appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
