The population of Carlyle, Illinois was 3,406 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Clinton County, IllinoisClinton County. The town was previously thought to be named for Thomas Carlyle, Scottish essayist. However, the City was given the name “Carlisle” in approximately 1819. Thomas Carlyle’s first major work, Sartor Resartus, was not written until 1832.
