The Golden Lion Tamarin, also known as Golden Marmoset, is a small New World monkey of the family Cebidae. Native to the Atlantic coastal forests of Brazil, the Golden Lion Tamarin is an endangered species with an estimated wild population of “more than 1,000 individuals” and a captive population maintained at approximately 490 individuals.
Golden lion tamarins live exclusively in the Brazilian rainforest, and scientists estimate that a century ago they numbered in the tens of thousands. But in the early ’70s, deforestation, poaching, and people taking the monkeys as pets caused the population to dip to fewer than 200. Now there are about 1,500, just 500 short of the reintroduction program’s goal of 2,000.
