Georgia was the youngest of all the original 13 colonies. They were also dependent on trade with Great Britain. The colony was divided on whether or not they should join the independence movement, because they still needed help. They had only had self-government since around 1754, so this was very new to them. Their third royal governor, James Wright, was very much admired by most Georgians. He had done a lot to expand the boundaries of the colony and expand the trade with England. As colonists grew to dislike the tax policies of Parliament, Georgians knew they had to make a decision: Rebel against the King and Parliament, or Stay loyal to both. The Loyalists or Tories, as they were called, tended to be first generation settlers. The Rebels, called Whigs or Patriots, tended to be the sons of these same colonists.
