What is the point of the European parliament?
The point of the EU Parliament is to try to make the passing of legislation in the EU more democratic, since the EU Parliament has a total membership of 732 MEPs from all 27 member countries. whereas the Commission is undemocratic because each member state has just one Commissioner who is appointed by the government of that country never elected by its population. The way legislation works is the Commission drafts a proposal which it submits to the Council and the EU parliament. the Council then consults the Economic and Social Committee, the european parliament and the committee of the regions. The EU parliament may then request that amendments are made. Then under the Single European Act, the role of the european parliament has been further strengthened by the introduction of the co-operation procedure.
