What is the point of the British Commonwealth? What actual purpose does it serve these days?

The Commonwealth of Nations pointedly dropped the “British” references in 1946. These days, it mainly serves to provide a forum for cultural exchange between countries that have little in common save for historical ties to Britain, and some of the institutions that accompany that heritage (such as English as a widely spoken language, use of the common law legal system etc).
