What is the point of putting people in prison?

I think prison has various purposes, depending on each case. Sometimes it’s about protecting the public, removing the person from society to reduce the risk to the public. And other times it’s about punishment, I think most people have a problem with the way prison sentences are carried out in Britain, i.e. prisoners are automatically released half way through their sentence so one year in prison actually means only six months, six years can mean only three. The public wants to know that if someone gets a prison sentence, they will serve it in prison and not be released years early.
