Also known as “Project Rainbow,” the Philadelphia Experiment was allegedly conducted by the U.S. Navy in 1943, as part of the military’s initiative to render one of their ships invisible. The incident is said to have occurred at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s Naval Shipyard on the USS Eldridge in front of witnesses who claim that the ship was invisible for a brief period. The U.S. Navy, however, denies that the experiment occurred. There are various contradictory reports surrounding the Philadelphia Experiment which lend skepticism to the story and cause many to believe the accounts are a hoax. The Philadelphia experiment was a study done by a team of scientists from all over the country, way back in the 1950s, which was to determine just how “free- thinking” rats can be. It’s because of its subject matter (freedom of thought) that it was called “The Philadelphia Experiment.” But, a little known fact is that it was conducted nowhere in Philadelphia, or even the state of Pennsylvania. It was conducted–from January of 1956 to February of 1957– in the state of Ohio. (In Cleavland.) In 1984, a movie by the very same was released. But, the motion picture hasn’t anything at all to do with the 1956-’57 experiment–which, unfortunately, was said by all the newspapers back then, to have been a total and complete failure. The movie grossed big bucks, though.
The legend goes that it all started when shipyard buildlers used huge electric currents to butt-weld the big steel plates of ships together; tools, etc would tend to disappear and never be found, starting research into early “stealth” technology, with supposedly disasterous results. Renegade scientist John Hutchison of Canada is supposed to be attempting to duplicate this experiment on small scale to see if the legendary results can be verified.
