The time is usually dependent on why the mother/father left, whether it can technically be termed abandonment, and whether or not the date of abandonment is exact. You have to file some kind of assumption of guardianship with the court system and be granted temporary custody b/f they can even take your abandonment charges seriously (ex: mom/dad come back, you don’t wanna give up baby, never filed report means abandonment never happened, end of story). Be forwarned that problems could arise. Your ability to provide for the child will be questioned and if you are found to be unfit (which I’m sure you aren’t), they’ll place the child in the state program.
