What is the percentage of academic vs. athletic scholarships in the U.S.?
Answer Francisco, Thanks for the question. I don’t know if I can give you a straight percentage answer but I can answer your question. Basically every school (there are exceptions of course) gives out some form of academic scholarship (also called merit aid or merit grants) so that is nearly 100% of all schools. As far as athletic scholarships go you have to understand a few things: 1) Only NCAA division 1 & 2 schools can give athletic schoalrhips (Division 3 schools do not award athletic scholarships), 2) Most students are not on “Full Rides” that cover all education costs, 3) Most kids on athletic scholarships get slightly less than $1000 per year. To put some of that in context realize that there are currently about 360,000 student athletes in the NCAA. Less than 10% of them are on Full Scholarships. These numbers include Division 1,2 and 3. Bottom line is that you actually have a better chance of getting more money by getting good grades and test scores than by being a good athlete
