What is the pecking order for Windows PCs for graduate students?
When you arrive in the department, you’ll notice that there are two sets of Windows PCs: those that are public and those that are on students’ desks. How did these students get so lucky? Here are some possibilities. • They were assigned a desk with a computer already on it. • Their advisor gave them a computer. • It’s the student’s personal computer. • They were next in the pecking order and the department had a free machine. • A student who had a computer on his/her desk left and another student moved to that desk. • They were quick off the mark when Zube needed to put a machine somewhere fast. The rule for Windows PCs is that they stay with the desk. This removes the “musical chairs” issue, wherein A wants the latest free computer and B wants A’s old machine and C wants B’s old machine, etc. There is no time for such silliness anymore.
