What is the PCI Data Security Standard?
The PCI Data Security Standard is a set of policies and procedures that help all entities protect card information that process, transmit, and/or store card data. PCI aligns the Visa Cardholder Information Security Program (CISP) and the MasterCard Site Data Protection (SDP) program. PCI Data Security Standard has been endorsed by all the major card brands, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. Merchants are responsible for the security of cardholder data and must be careful not to store certain types of data on their systems or the systems of their third-party service providers. Merchants are also responsible for any damages or liability that may occur as a result of a data security breach or non-compliance with the PCI Data Security Standard.
