What is the pattern of lectures, classes, seminars, tutorials and self-directed work for this course?
The MSc in Modern Chinese Studies features one core course teaching foundational knowledge of modern Chinese history, politics and society. In addition, either an Upper Intermediate Chinese Language course is chosen or an option course from modules in Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, History, International Relations, or Politics. There is also a compulsory course in Research Methodology. Each module will involve lectures as well as seminar or class discussions, for both of which you will receive reading lists. It is a fundamental component of the Oxford educational system that students engage in individual reading and study in order to broaden and deepen their knowledge of their chosen field. You will be expected to show initiative and effort in exploring literature and ideas. You will do so not only in the written work for each module, usually a 2500 word essay, but also in seminar discussions. There will be an opportunity to broaden your knowledge via the great number of lectures
