Details are hazy, but will firm up as the marketplace matures. Presumably most companies will continue to pursue their patent rights. Notably, one of the major Subparts (Subpart 4, Structured Audio) has been placed in the public domain by its developer, the MIT Media Lab, and anyone is welcome to use it for free. The same is true of the AudioBIFS technology in the Systems standard.
