What is the overall pine bark beetle situation in the greater Santa Fe area?
In 2002-2003 prolonged drought conditions were especially favorable for several species of pine bark beetles to experience a population explosion, primary among these being the PiƱon Ips Beetle. Because the region-wide drought weakened trees’ ability to resist these insects, millions of trees were killed in Arizona and New Mexico, including the Santa Fe area. Drought conditions eased somewhat in 2004, causing the bark beetle spread to lessen across New Mexico.
