The container shipping industry is expected to face a challenging time into 2010. The reduction in consumer demand due to the global economic downturn also coincides with an all-time high orderbook. As a result of the over-capacity, there is tremendous pressure on freight rates. With more newbuildings scheduled for delivery into 2010, excess tonnage is expected to continue and it will be some time before the supply-demand equilibrium is restored. We remain optimistic about the prospects of container shipping in the long-term, as globalisation will continue to drive trade growth. Given that container shipping is still the most efficient means of transporting consumer goods from one part of the world to another, the long-term fundamentals of container shipping remain strong.
