What is the outlook for gas consumption in India?
Currently, consumption of natural gas in the primary energies is around seven per cent in India, while the world average is 23 per cent. Hence, there is huge potential for gas consumption in India. However, imports in this sector should remain competitive to meet the needs of the Indian economy and the domestic consumers. Basically, the problem today is this: natural gas is used in sectors such as power and fertiliser, which are both sensitive to price. Hence, the price of natural gas has to remain competitive so that demand for it will increase. Has GAIL attained the targets it had set for itself for FY01?
