http://www.crivoice.org/cyepiph.html The Season of Epiphany By Dennis Bratcher In western Christian tradition, January 6 is celebrated as Epiphany. It goes by other names in various church traditions. In Hispanic and Latin culture, as well as some places in Europe, it is known as Three Kings’ Day (Span: el Dia de los Tres Reyes, la Fiesta de Reyes, or el Dia de los Reyes Magos; Dutch: Driekoningendag). Three Kings Day or Epiphany Celebrated Today Updated: Wednesday, 06 Jan 2010, 1:31 PM EST Published : Wednesday, 06 Jan 2010, 12:41 PM EST By FRANK CARNEVALE (MYFOX NATIONAL) – Today is Three Kings Day, also known as the Epiphany. This Christian day is usually celebrated on Jan. 6 and is viewed as the last day of the Christmas season, or the end of the 12 days of Christmas. It is a holy day for Eastern Christian and Western Christian churches and commemorates the visit of the Magi, or the Three Wise Men, who brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. In some cultures, the day is especially important to children as it is the day they receive their Christmas gifts. In Puerto Rico, the tradition of gifts presented to baby Jesus is reflected in the present day with the belief that on this eve, the Three Kings will visit every good child to deliver them gifts.

It falls on 6 January or, in many countries, on the Sunday that falls between 2 January and 8 January.[1][2] Since the Julian Calendar, which is followed by some Eastern Churches, is at present 13 days behind the Gregorian Calendar and the revised Julian Calendar, 6 January in that calendar corresponds at present to 19 January in what is the official civil calendar in most countries. On this feast, Western Christians commemorate principally the visitation of the Biblical Magi to the Baby Jesus, i.e., his manifestation to the Gentiles; Eastern Christians commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God. It is also called Theophany, especially by Eastern Christians. The observance had its origins in the Eastern Christian Churches, and was a general celebrati
