What is the orrigin of the England emblem of 3 lions?
Scotland have an emblem of ONE lion on their shirts and the Royal Standard, but when the English saw this, jealousy raged within them and, not wishing to be outdone, decided to go not only one better, but two. Originally, King Henry the 8th wanted as many as 20 to ‘teach those cheeky highlanders a lesson”, but not all Englishmen were as fat as old Henry and half the lions simply ‘disappeared’. At one time, people from the north-east of the country (around Hartlepool) wanted to replace the lions with monkeys, as that’s what they thought Frenchmen looked like, but folk from other parts of jolly ol’ England thought donkeys were more appropriate (must have had a vision of future England football teams!), and some even wanted the lions replaced with a plough horse, but common sense prevailed and we are left with what we have to-day while the Scots still need only need one lion to represent their nation.
